B2TB Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Has anyone found an alternative to the Hella Marine fold down stern light? I’ve tried drilling the hole in the light and it’s not practical to keep it in the up position so it always floods. The “new” model says it’s sealed and I have tried contacting Hella but they don’t respond. I prefer a fold down to a fixed mount
Tails Up Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Hella does have a led version. This is not the same as putting a led bulb in their regular model. Mine were lasting about a year prior to replacing them with the new led model. Coming up on a year without issue
polliwog Posted September 30, 2019 Report Posted September 30, 2019 How about just putting the light in the middle of the platform in the rear and leaving it in the upright position. My Hella is in the upright position and is noe over 10yrs old. It is the standard fixture. That position shouldn't interfere with poling of the rig.
finbully Posted January 16, 2020 Report Posted January 16, 2020 Here's the factory solution on newer Mavs. Very good idea!
B2TB Posted January 16, 2020 Author Report Posted January 16, 2020 To Hella's credit they did respond and sent me a free LED sealed replacement. Hella says the new LED versions are sealed and water won't get in no matter which position it's in.

(yeah, you all saw simething like that coming, didnt you?)
jim33042 Posted January 17, 2020 Report Posted January 17, 2020 I replaced the old bulb version with the pick style shown above about two years ago. Installed it on top of platform where and old gps antenna was located. I’ve had no problems since. The unit is also rugged and forgiving, as I’ve bounced a spreader bar off it a few times with no damage. I highly recommend tossing that troublesome bulb version, the money for the newer unit is worth it.
