I've been on this forum for about 15 years and have seen the challenges Capt Troy has gone through.... I believe we will see the guide business, at least full time, become a career path few can follow, and especially on the West Coast of Florida. With insurance, fuel, boat costs, etc., I don't know how any of the guides make a "living" to support a family. The guides I have seen who seem to do still "love" the business are the Fireman who have the ability to guide a few days a week and then have the stability of their own careers. They guide for a few $$ but, love being out on the water. Some of the backcountry guides in Chokoloskee are having to charge $650 plus per day. Offshore fuel, bait, etc. can run $200 a day....don't know how it can be sustained long term...but, I admire those who can do it.

Its funny you mention the Fire department. I just graduated the fire academy and am out for hire as of a few weeks ago. I am excited to see what the future brings. I will still guide, but it will be with a select client base and not out of necessity. I have two daughters I have been spending time with more and more since scaling back the guiding. Its awesome! I've been guiding full time for 11 years. Enough is enough. LOL

I’ll be at most everything else though.
