Opinion on re-power

Recommended Posts

So unfortunately, my '05 225 VMAX destroyed a piston. I'd only had the boat for a couple of years, and only put another ~50hrs on it, so I think I got screwed with luck on that powerhead (FWIW, mechanic and compression test had looked at it and thought it looked good, and we had even re-sealed the lower unit after I got it).

That being said, I now have to figure out what to do: buy something rebuilt, or perhaps a new VMAX SHO.

I was curious what others have done in similar situations and what your thought process, outcomes, and time-away from the decision have been like.

The hull is the 2200 TE, which I absolutely love, and is in great shape. All of the electronics I redid myself, and its just the way I want it, so I have no interest in buying a new/different boat.

I lean towards getting another SHO 225, cause it's been pretty nice hitting nearly 60mph on nice days.

I just went through this same exercise with my 2004 2200TE and ended up replacing the original motor (200HP HPDI) with a 200HP E-TEC.

I really wanted to go with the SHO 250, since it is the same weight as the 200, but it was several thousand dollars more. I would say if it's within your budget and you are happy with your local Yamaha dealer, that would be the perfect choice for your hull.

Best of luck with whatever you decide on.

Yamaha VF 250 SHO. You could possibly find one refurbished. The SHO four stroke has proven to be a very reliable and long living outboard. Worth the extra dollars IMO and experience. I have to say the new Suzuki's are building a great reputation.
