Spinning Reels

So I couldn't remember if this has been covered before.  I am looking at replacing some spinning reels as mine are in the 10-15 year range old and my Diawa BG series are at least 30 and they are heavy.  I know a lot of you flats guys use spinners more than casting.  What do you all like to throw and I am looking anywhere from $100-$150.

Check out the Florida Fishing Products Osprey line.  The new Osprey CE is $199 but the original Osprey I think is right there at $149.  I got two of the original Osprey reels a year or two ago in 2500 size, I love them and they still run like new.  This year I picked up one of the new Osprey CE in 1000 size, phenomenal reel is my initial reaction.  Sexy, light weight, and still gives you 26lb of drag!  Definitely worth looking into at least.

My guide boat has a mixture of Florida Fishing Products Osprey 3000CE, Shimano Stradic 3000, and Shimano Sustain 3000. All are excellent. Spend a few extra bucks and get the drag you hoped for, and the reliability you need. BTW the Sustain has the smoothest drag. All these reels work HARD, hundreds of hours annually. I rarely wear one out.

Shimano Stradic 5000’s on my Loomis rods and Diana BG 4000’s on my Star rods. I too agree that the Diawa BGs are a good value. I prefer reels with large handles. I always buy rods/reels in sets of two or four. I like my gear to match, my wife says I have issues. I use a lot of 15lb Power Pro in moss green for backwater and 20lb mono Momoi Diamond for Dolphin.

Although this was primarily a “spinner” conversation for my conventional setups I have Avets on St Croix Mojo rods.

Nobody using Penn Battles ?????  I have Penn Battle 2.   2500s,  3000s  and 6000s. They have been very good. No problems, smooth and durable.

I bought two Penn Clash 2500s and they are good but I like my Battles more if you can believe that.

I have a couple of Battles and have had to replace parts on them.  There is a small plastic part in the bail release that fails after a while.  I will say that Penn has stepped up its game finally and is machining its gears now and not casting them.

Shimano and Daiwa have a great marketing program that others like Quantum do not.  The Stratic is the 1# selling reel, so they are the target of the other manufacturers.  I own a lot of them and have had many different models.  The ones that pissed me off the most had the rubbery grip turn to a sticky mess.  The older wooden handles were better.  The Quantum Smoke has a 5 year warranty.  No one else does at that price point.  If the Stratic is in your price point, look at the Smoke, IMHO they are slightly better than the Stratic and cost less.

Having said all of that, the rod and then the line are more important than the spinning reel, but that is probably a conservation for another post.

Been using Penn for years. Most of mine are the older American made models. Did but a Clash for freshwater and has worked without a problem for two years.

Everybody,

Thanks so much for all the input.  I have looked at quite a few of these models that I have not used nor heard of.  I am a huge Diawa fan and will probably hone in on a Diawa model but will not rule out some of the others.  Something I did not mention earlier, I primarily fish freshwater with the occasional salt dip so not sure if I need to be too concerned about the corrosion aspect.  Just something I wanted too mention.

I am a little late to the party but I bought Daiwa Fuego LT's in 1000 and 2500 model and they are holding up well. I saw some of you mentioned the Florida fishing Osprey brand and I bought one of those in 1000 series(18# drag). I did splurge and buy a Daiwa Luvias (2500) this year but that is out of your price range.

I've got several spinning reels but for the money, can't beat the Shimano Nasci and the Daiwa BG series.  Both at that $100.00 price point.  I have a few reels that are in that $200+ range and the only difference I can tell is weight and maybe drag.  Chose to stick with Shimano and Daiwa because of availability.
