Truluck
...any suggestions for a tarpon pattern for dirty (think Appalachicola bay dirty) water? The pogies are as think as fleas and is what they are chasing but I can't get them to touch a fly for all the tea in China. I don't want to resort to (gasp) pitching pogies so please help! Truluck
Thanks for the advice on the colors guys! What about the fly shape? A sparse pattern vs. a heavily dressed and one with a lot of action (bunny strips) vs. less action (hackle). One last question, to circle hook or no? Capt Ron
I've had good results with fully dressed, dark, clousers and whistlers...flies that will "push" some of the muddy water. While the schools of pogies hold some tarpon, they are also competing with sharks and sail cats. Typically, tarpon fishing in Apalach is more productive away from the bait schools. jaym
Capt Bob Lemay ties a fly called a Tarpon Snake that is designed for what you are looking for. It is a BIG fly. I would guess 6-8 inches long. The fly has 6-8 long black hackles for the wing then it has a palmered black hackles for the head with lead eyes. It is kind of a oversized seaducer. Ole Florida Fly Shop in Boca used to carry them. Ole Florida Jay
