wesman
So, I have bought my second PF recently with an 04 F150 with about 300 hours. I have read till my eyes bleed about the non-recall Harmonic balancer composite gear issue. I have also called Yamaha and they said it is a problem, which is why they lowered the prince of the part from $1200 to $400. Having said that, I think I have a bad one with the whining sound and have the part on order. I am however, curious how many others have either had the catastrophic failure of a bad balancer or how many have just switched it out for piece of mind. It's tough to do a $500 repair for "just in case" but it's cheaper than a new motor I suppose. Thanks in advance.
Grant
My mechanic noticed the "whine" beginning in mine last year. I was glad he caught it and decided to get-r-dun. She's all I got when I'm out there ! This was actually the first I'd spent on mine other than standard servicing. I'm pretty happy with that at 500 hours. wthree3
'05 and mine had a definite whine at about the 300 hour mark. Had it replaced under the extended YES warranty.
mattconrad
Definitely have it done. I will not sell a Yamaha F150 without it being done. It is well worth the piece of mind. I have seen them come apart on 50 hour engines and I have seen 1000 hour engines on the original balancer.
dabear
What year did Yamaha correct the problem? Did they start using a new deigned balancer on the 2009 F150's ?
wesman
From what I have read, I think they fixed it after 07.
wesman
Thanks all, switched it out last night, ran boat today and sounded much quieter. No more whine and gives me piece of mind.
