castafly
Hey folks. I was debating whether or not to install a hydraulic Jack plate on my 2001 maverick 21. I've never had a Jack plate and would like to know about any pros and cons. Currently Powered with a Yamaha vmax hpdi 175. Thanks
linesider 159
Not too many cons besides expense and maybe a little more sag/draft. But the pros fad outweigh the cons in my opinion
whichwaysup
+1 to everything Linesider just said. One of those things that can give you just a little more peace of mind when running.
Wanaflatsfish
Depending on your tower, you might need to increase the height. I had a JP on a 22Pathy. Would get another. dc
tidewater
My cousin's 2001 MA21 has one and I couldn't imagine the boat without it. Especially if you want to go shallow.
Big Dave
I had a jack plate on my 17 MA. Really useful.
Yellow mouth
I have one on my 21 MA and love it. So nice to motor off a skinny flat with it all the way jacked up. Old boat didn't have one and would have to trim the motor up so much it would sometimes overheat.. Didn't know what I was missing
topshelf 2
Recently installed a 6" atlas on my 18.5 ma and find it to be a great help when fishing the very skinny water these boats were made for .the atlas works great I use it quite a bit, installed it in 3/15 . DaveC
What motor are you running, was height okay under platform? Bob's jackplate, setback?
bdsnook
I personally will never own an inshore boat without one!
pondfisher
This has been discussed a number of times over the years and USUALLY the consensus is that a plate works great on the 21, good on the 18.5 as well, but not on the 17. Many previous 17 owners as well as Skip suggested that I not put a plate on my 17 and they were right. The cons: You can only raise the plate up about an inch or so before the prop loses bite and the boat starts to porpoise badly. Yes you can slam the trim tabs all the way down and that helps but you absolutely cannot raise the plate up all the way for a hole shot, cruising speed or wide open. I also lost a couple of HP at the top end. The pros: If you don't feel like deploying your trolling motor, it's nice to be able to raise the plate all the way up to just slowly idle around looking for bait or fish in shallow water or getting up close to the beach. Also good for trailering since you can just put plate all the way up and leave it there giving plenty of road clearance. I know some may disagree with the performance points but the 17 truly performs better without a plate.
Mitz
I purchased a used CMC jackplate that I plan on "trying" out as I have fears that it will come w more cons then pros but will keep u guys posted as to the impact. will try to get some real world draft figures and changes. topshelf, got any pics that you can post? buttapollock101
Installed one on my old MA 17 with nothing but improvements. I'll never own another boat without one!
pondfisher
Installed one on my old MA 17 with nothing but improvements. I'll never own another boat without one! But Robert, you had a Yami 130 with your setup which I think allowed the JP to work better than with my F100. You had more power, light 2 stroke. Not sure why (hull design on the 17, motor choice, etc.) but you simply cannot raise the plate more than 3" without losing bite and cavitating badly. buttapollock101
I only had the JP with my f115. I blew the 130 up and when I repower I installed the jp then. I had one house/starting battery back rear hatch. Then 2 troller batteries in console. Boat ran good. I ran a bunch of props and my prop results are posted in the prop section. Wanaflatsfish
Most JP owners are running 4 blades with heavy bite. On my Pathy 22V i was running a OFX...to me it's a requirements...i fiddled with a 3 blade and it would blow out immediately in turn and hole shot lacked when up on 5-6. dc
Mitz
just installed a CMC 5.5inch set back jackplate. will share performance and pics when I can. also draft changes etc
Mitz
tach wasn't working i ran the boat. i think i unplugged something in the console when i was doing some wiring so gotta get rpm changes when i can. Speed w current 58ish and against 55 giving avg of 56.5 which would be an increase in rpm and speed by around 2-3mph hence why i need to get it working to confirm but it ran great!
