The Culprit

On January 1, I was running back to the Marina and had been cruising around 3900 to 4300 rpm’s when out of the blue my engine idles down and does not let me come on to plane. It only let me go to 2000 RPMs which was fine because I was heading back in the the marina.

A while ago, I had a similar situation, turned out to be my oil pump on the external tank.  Seeing that the pump was the original (22 years old) I replaced it as well as the small filters around the tank.  Unfortunately, this did not solve my problem as I wet tested the boat came back with the same symptoms.

My buddy and I were able to narrow it down to some type of fuel starvation. I would run the boat wide-open throttle and like clockwork at 55 seconds it would bog down. No alarms just starving for gas. Did this for five repetitions and got the same thing every time. Boat never stalled and was able to get back on the plane to test it again after 10 minutes of idling.

A few years ago I came across a sale online for fuel pumps for my outboard, and I purchased them, but never installed them because I really didn’t have any symptoms or problems. At the boat back to the house popped out the old ones put in the new ones then got the boat back out there and she ran even better than she’s been running in a long time. I was able to get her up to 47 mph at 5200 RPMs And she hasn’t smelled those numbers in a while! I rarely run wide-open throttle. Ordinarily, I’m just cruising as I don’t see the need to go that fast but it was nice to see!

I had no idea that those fuel pumps scheduled maintenance is every three years. Those were the original, so definitely got my moneys worth. Once I got home, I was curious to see what went bad, and apparently the diaphragm was torn and it was just sucking air as the screws that you remove to open it were loose and just allowing air to get in.

Here are some images of the new and old ones with torn diaphragm. 1BC1F4BB-BFD3-4EC0-989C-04C49A7571A2.thumb.jpeg.0516fe0fcd74a5410dfdfe7120e796ea.jpegB66C2C2C-D41D-41C9-83E1-7B3AD1F1E9D2.thumb.jpeg.5fbef1de54eb73b9ca0a7d4553f1d1c9.jpeg0DEEA075-25DC-4BE9-ADE3-222A84445576.thumb.jpeg.5420f3a5851950dd6131ad96322ba325.jpeg6FB86CC9-AB9C-40F2-BF85-9216D538A06B.thumb.jpeg.18671b589e3eefeaf7898fd9450dfa9b.jpeg45204AA0-3A6E-4344-9D40-74BBC191827C.thumb.jpeg.def16002d3f6bf372d129f8d45a79fdc.jpegF00680F3-02AA-46E6-B207-2BE383ED2735.thumb.jpeg.ada7d6c3463abf60c6857cd187503e1d.jpeg96C0A8FD-6D2B-45C5-AAB5-12C5636823E2.thumb.jpeg.6de10143dfd76bd6ae7bfa6f239c6ecb.jpegThese are so old that I don’t even think they make the repair kit for that fuel pump.
