nicecast
I'm having my first-ever T-top built and am trying to decide whether to get round grommets or a Velcro slot in the Sunbrella for the tips of rods stored in the side-of-console vertical rod storage. If you were building new which would you choose?
fin-addict
I have the slot style, rather have the grommet holes. they hold the rod tips more secure. the edges of the flap starts to curl up in time and the velco starts to fade at the edges so I use a marker pen to color or you start seeing white. flaps can be noticed as the gromments are very hard to see. I very seldom use them. jmo, fin
bernieNC
I have the Velcro slot/flap with a Weblon top and would do it again. To me the slot is a little better "target" for rod tips. It can also be closed in a down pour if needed (I don't). I also like the Weblon over Sunbrella as it cleans easier and stays waterproof.
justdriftin
I have the grommets, but have no experience with the velcro. Generally like the grommets, but guides sometimes hang on the "fingers" of the grommet. On some my larger and longer rod, I have to get it pretty high up there to have enough clearance to get down into the butt holder and run into the larger guides. I guess I could go with a larger grommet if it was a big issue, but its not. Other than that, I'm happy with them, pretty stable.
CaptDavis
What bout nothing there. A cut out, like a wish bone. I have one on mine and love it. I loose a little bit of coverage, but I can pull any rod I want in and out like the t-top was not even there. Email me, and I can send you a pic of what I am referring to. captdavis1@aol.com
fishtaco
I've had zippered, with Velcro flap covering and no complaints.
Fish Food
Weblon or the like over Sunbrella for sure. Whichever you choose on the grommet, etc., make sure that they are easy to put the rods through. I made mine bigger, didn't have a flap to cover up, so the slot was relatively small and slowed you down when putting up rods. Good luck!
SCFD rtrd.
Never had a T-top, but had zippers in a Bimini and they worked great. The trick to getting rods in and out is to spin the rod so the eyes are in-line with the zipper. Mine was just a zipper, no flaps or anything else and they did not leak. fin-addict
that's a great idea. did the zippers leave marks on the rods.
SCFD rtrd.
I don't think so. It's been a while, but if the zippers marked the rods, I'm sure I would have noticed. By the way, the zippers are plastic. You know, the very heavy zippers like the ones used for the Bimini (storage boot).
