sdiq
Hi new to forum, and new to mav. Just traded my mako 254 for this 1883 mav 18 with a 200 optimax. I relize the boat is over powered but theirs got to be a way to get the boat to stop porpoising I tried jack plate all the way down trim all the way down, I can put it up on a plane trim to fairly nice ride but any change in throtel and she bucks like crasy if I trim down to stop the bucking the bow wants to dig. a friend suggested a dowelfin what have you guys found that works thanks

Tarpon Terry
In the order of ease and cost: First, get a 5 degree negative wedge from Bob's Machine Shop. It fits between the transom and the motor bracket. This will give your motor more down trim. Second, give Funky Monkey a holler. He will be able to recommend a prop that will help fix your problem. Third, you might want to remove the jack plate. Fourth, you might want to trade out the motor for a lighter one. You have a cl***ic and it deserves to be set up properly. tidewater
What Terry said. The green "Sveiks" in the picture next to yours in the main screen is still rigged as Terry described. It does on occasion porpoise a bit when I'm first getting up and running out of the shallows, but as said, with the motor and Jackplate all the way down and sometimes just a touch of tabs it runs great. I had a Mako 201 before this boat and I had a hard time getting used to such a low bow position when running. I thought I was always "digging in", but that was not the case, the boat just runs very level. Take some time and run through the different speeds and adjust(tabs, trim and JP) as you go and you will find you can (or should) be able to eliminate the porpoising at all speeds. I don't know about the weight of the engine though. Although, if you are set on speed, the slight tab use will slow you a bit. Just use the minimum amount of tabs needed. It doesn't take much. I have the yammi 150 2 stroke with a PT 4 blade prop and love the performance. I'm sure the 3 blade might be faster on top end, but the 4blade has great grip in turns and great hole shot. Top end speed is not my primary criteria.
poleposition
Truth is the MA 18 and 17 have the propensity for porpoise. I think the 18 was originaly designed for a 2 stroke V-4 way back before the many upgrades. In my case, I have no jackplate (which I feel the boat does not need and only exacerbates porpoise). I also keep as much weight forward as possible. My trolling bateries are uner the front hatch and my cranking battery is in the front portion of the console. I run an OFXR19 and get fantastic holeshot and grip in the turns. It will do 50MPH WOT with a light load (2 castnets in the bow, fishing gear, trolling motor 1/2 tank and power pole). I cruise at 3500RRPM @30MPH ant 5.7 MPG...BUT I need a touch of tab to stop the hop. I posted my dealer on this, worked extensively with Marcus at powertech and even mentioned the issue to Skip and none could find a solution other than use tabs. Two things you can consider beyond prop and movng weight...I would add a Bobs Machine Shop cavitation plate (also helps w/holeshot) and consider bigger tabs. By extending the tabs, you exend the running surface of the skiff which will help a great deal. Good luck and enjoy her. The 18 is a very versitile, great riding skiff. hurricane
Loose the jackplate. I don't know how much shallower you can run with it. Larger trim tabs, it looks like you have small bennet tabs. Add some weight to the front and replace the prop. Good luck nice looking boat. schwaggen
Everyone's covered it. When I first put my boat together, the trim tabs did not work, and it was a bucking bronco at everything but ball-out WOT. Now, a touch of tab and you're riding the magic carpet. buttapollock101
Nice looking sled! Keep the 200 ponies!!!!! Call marcus work on the prop and get a wedge as terry mentioned. Best of luck. Robert
sdiq
you were right just took some getting used to, boat rides nice with just enougth tabs to stop the buck. I'm used to a lot more realastate up front and being able to lift the bow a lot more , this boat rides level, took some time to get used to small boat again, things I did'nt worry about in my 26' mako like slowing down for other boat wakes, the sound of water thru the hull, but I'm getting there I love the Mav. have had a blast fishing the river looking forward to a keys trip
poleposition
Glad you are happy...the MA 17 and 18.5 are really cool little boats with cl***ic lines. Just curious: what does your boat do for top end?
sdiq
the previous owner told me 3/4 throtel was 67mph and the boat got squirley so he never pushed it farther. I've only had to about 3500rpm wtich was 36mph on the gps. this is also my first merc. and my first injected motor and man I like it. when you stsrt it on the trailer my nierbors diesel truck makes more noise than my outboard and its been great on gas. I went to the merc web site and read the charts they say its faster more tork and better on fule than the E-tecs of course they are also the ones selling them
poleposition
Please post when you can confirm performance. The previous owner may have been a tad optimistic. Glad you love the boat...you'll continue to be impressed with what the hull can do. As for Merc, they really have the optis dialed in. They are great motors. Hobo
SDIQ the previous owner told me 3/4 throtel was 67mph and the boat got squirley so he never pushed it farther I hope that you won't be too disappointed to discover that everything your previous owner told you isn't exactly the whole truth and nothing but the truth!!! I ***ume that you are implying that because the previous owner said he was running 67 mph at 3/4 throttle then at wide open throttle it would be running 89.3 mph!   I believe that perhaps the previous owner was a little squirrely!!! And with bottom paint too,,,,,,,I don't think so! I seriously doubt if this boat is capable of even 67 mph running wide open,,,,, Well maybe on the expressway on the trailer.... :content: :content: Your numbers, "36 mph @ 3500 rpm" sound a lot more believable.... This would most likely translate to around 56-59 mph at 5500 rpm (wot).... I'm not trying to be a smart *** or mean spirited,,,, just a realist..... You have a mighty fine boat... I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have mine.... --------------<" ){{{{{*><

sdiq
OK I think Iv'e come a long way, I put on the neg 5 degree wedges that helped coming up on plane a lot but not so much with the porpoise. my mec. gave me a turbo lift plate he said would take care the porpoise but of corse it was made for a omc and would'nt fit. so I found 2 big stainless trim tabs on a transom washed up on shore welded them together into 1 big plate and cut out my own cavation plate thats the s#%t now I can use the transom jack under power before I could only use it at idle. with the 5 1/2" set back on the transom jack and all the way down the cavation plate is 4" above the bottom of the boat now under power I can lift it another 3" now at 3100 rpm I'm getting 34 mph with a standard quicksliver 19 pitch prop, and the boat comes out of the hole flat no more wheele at all,and one touch of tabs and no more poroise, I hope to soon be able to get a surface pircing prop about a 21 or 22 pitch but as of now can't afford one also added a nice cabnet in front of the console moved my GPS and bottom mac. so I can see it now ,gl***ed in the bottom of my live wells so I'm not carring and exter 150 lbs of water everwhere I go, put a transom pump and thru hull br*** skimmer so I can fill and empty them as I please will try to get pics on soon, thanks to all for suggestions and tech. help
sdiq
finaly got my prop to a prop shop what a diff. went to a local shop in vero, explained to the fella about the porpoies and the way the boat want to ride flat at speed. he turned my 19p to a 21 and said he could add enough cup to get 75% of the hull out of the water, also said that amount of cup would add about 1 more inch of pitch. now the spray under the hull is from where i sit and back took 1 bump of tabs to stop the porpies. the river was rough but with the bow up at 3000 rpm she rode very nice at 31 mph , to rough and to many cops out on the weekend to try wot but will let you know
WestFoto
sounds like it is getting closer. I know you will love it when you get it. Keep it up. I know that when I had a lot of water in the stern of my Hewes that It was porposing like crazy. So do what others have said and get as much forward as you can. My rig now runs like a dream. Just not as fast as I have a 90 on the back.

GLENN
Tidewater, What waters do you fish with your Maverick? I fish the Baybridge up to the Flats in my Pathfinder. Glenn Fallston
tidewater
Glen, I fish mostly Chester River itself down to the bridge. I also fish Tangier Sound especially the islands Bloodsworth, Southmarsh, Hollands Is. etc. Never over 5' mostly under 3' up against the banks. Yesterday we went out of Crisfield on my cousin's 21 MA and went to Smith Island and around there. not much doing surprisingly, but we had ethanol problems and ended up going from Smith to Crisfield at a bout 10 mph. LoNG AND SLOW. I live in Centreville on the estern shore. Where are you located?
GLENN
I live in Fallston and put in at the Gunpowder. Fish all of the upper bay except I don't go into the Patapsco which really is a very good fishery. Lots of structure as you can imagine. I love fishing shoreline more than anything targeting mostly stripers. Glenn
sdiq
no way to get rid of bottom paint , I tried and the hull is gray unedr the bottom paint. It came off easy I used easy off oven cleaner and a green scrubby, but had to repaint. I went to paint store and had them match the color in their best oil base, so now it dosn't come off when you touch or scrub it, I keep it on the trailer so I dont't need bottom paint
sdiq
no way to get rid of bottom paint the hull is gray under the bottom paint she had a complete refurb in 04, I took off the bottom paint with easy off oven cleaner and a green scrubby and repainted in oil base so it dosn't come off when you touch or scrub it, I keep it on the trailer so I don't need bottom paint, I live in Sebastian FL and fish the Indain river and Seb inlet, and Sebastian river, just put the name on the sides of the boat "STRAY CONCH" I'm a conch by birth and moved here in the late 70s so I figure I'm a stray conch
