1995 Yamaha ProV 115

Supposed to be a fresh rebuild (which I don't like the sound of), and overall appearance is rough around the edges. Would love to upgrade my perfectly running 90 hp Yammie to some more ponies, but don't want someone else's junk.

What's a good price for the 115?

115 proV is a good engine. They produce slightly more HP then they are rated at. I have a 1994 on a 24' pontoon and it runs like a raped ape. I picked mine up for 1,000 bucks off craigslist. No prop, no controls. I wouldn't pay more than 2,000 for a ProV.

I'm not scared of rebuilds. I have built a few myself. But someone else building my engine I would need some info. What made it blow to begin with? Who rebuilt it? What company was used for the parts? Who did the machine work and how much was needed (machine work is very important!) A good engine builder can build one better than factory, but there are shade tree mechanics out there that have no idea what they are doing. A rebuild costs some coin so the seller should have a good invoice if it was done legit.

Good motors for sure! Love mine. They run strong and gear ratios on the 150's are quite different than the other Yamaha outboards of same h.p. Not sure on the smaller ones though.

Rebuilds have to be with the right shop and with good warranty...the good shop in our area offers 3 years. Friend had his Pro V 150 rebuilt and it let go twice after his rebuild with two diff and unrelated issues. One was problem w the head itself in the manufacturing process and the other a plug prob w a cylinder but the shop doing the work covered everything both times...so...if they are good and confident they stand behind their stuff and even fix it when it wasn't their problem but problems with what they are supplied.

My decision in your situation would hinge on my confidence in the shop obviously.

Thanks RL, I saw those mixed reviews on THT too. Was hoping someone had first hand experience with them. I've got an inquiry over at FS forum too in the SW section as well, but no one has chimed in.

I have no doubt the ProV 115 is a good motor, I 'm just leery of a rebuild with no intimate knowledge of who did it. Quality Outboards is supposed to have offered a 2 year warranty, but it's not exactly right down the street if there's a problem. I want a 2 stroke Yammie 115 soooooooo bad!! That said, my 90 Yammie runs like a top, so I won't sacrifice it for something that could be marginal.

I used Flagship Marine in Punta Gorda, FL to rebuild a 115 for a blown cylinder. Tore it down to the block, boxed it up and was back in a week done with fresh paint also. Got one year warranty. Motor ran well and sold it locally to a gentleman who has been running it every weekend and no problems.

  • 2 weeks later...

I bagged my Pro  V 150 1997 when it developed corrosion and leaked water into 2 cylinders.  Too bad because I loved the engine.  I just didn't want to do a rebuild on a 19 yr old motor.  I think these motors are designed for bass boats used in fresh water.  Corrosion is a basic issue to be  careful about.
