whichwaysup
Hey folks - A few months ago, I'd run across a great post about shining up an old trailer and using a product called "sharkhide" to protect it. I did a little research on the stuff and saw some references to folks putting it on their fiberglass hulls (it is primarily meant for aluminum hulled boats). When your boat is 30 years old, you'll try stuff you wouldn't do on a newer hull, so I decided to give it a shot. I'd just finished wet sanding the gel coat and had it to a pretty decent shine. I only put one application of the stuff on there and hoped for the best. . . . WOW - I was immediately impressed. Some streaking on one side where I went a little thin (found out later a second coat would have resolved that). Big question was, how would it hold up? Around here, the brown water stains white hulls worse than anything I've ever seen. It's probably 4-6 months since I tried it and the boat is beautiful. I give it a quick spray down after some of the trips, but even when I don't, she stays far cleaner. And when I do give her a quick wipe down, it's no longer a chore. Good stuff - it's expensive, but if you have an older boat, it's worth a try.
linesider 159
Wow, very interesting to hear! Glad it worked for you! Wonder if it blocks UV rays like wax?
whichwaysup
I'll google it. Curious too. Tempted to put this on my truck, but not sure I"m that brave. Wish it would fix that darned chip in the front of the boat.
SCFD rtrd.
Wow, that boat looks really good for 30 years. I remember when you posted about using it on the hull and no one had the answer. Did you just do the water-line or the entire hull, because the hull is really shinny.
RipTide
There's a product called POLI GLOW out there for older oxidized boat hulls. Disclaimer: Have never used it. http://poliglow-int.com/product-category/poliglow-products/

johnd
I have used Poly Glo. It's basically vinyl floor wax.. Spend a lot of time prepping (like anything). Goes on easy. Last about a year in Fl sun..then it yellows, so recoat. If you ever want to remove it, it's a real b::th. Have not used Sharkhide... Your photos look awesome. I'm now in month 4 with product (name ?, Mag-something). a local guy did. Still looks like he waxed it yesterday. However, at the cost I'm hoping it looks good in 12 months...we will see

Just about everybody who has claimed to used it, except you, have claimed it doesn't yellow and last for 2-3 yr.'s. Good to know what it's really about. johnd
Riptide: neighbor just a boat a 27' cat, the hulls were really shining in June when we bought. Guy told us he PolyGlowed. As of today it has not yellowed, but not as shiny. I did my 25 Carolina Classic a number of years ago. Sat on lift in direct sun. It looked great going on, but within a year started to yellow...in two years where I didn't recoat, it showed large areas of splotches. And a total pain to remove. Btw: their powdered cleaning product works awesome! I still have some and use when areas need deep cleaning, including rust.
