Minnkota Ulterra 80 # Update on Performance

Well,

It's been about 15 trips so far and I must say these things are the best thing since sliced bread, peanut butter and jelly, gin and tonic, and pasta with meat sauce, all wound into one !!!

Was worried about it breaking down, not working, etc. etc....well, it hasn't missed a beat....and in those 15 trips, I have run the heck out of it...up and down, load and unload, slow and fast, at least 10-15 launches per trip from moving and 5x's that in changing the position and speeds....

I use it for long runs to the shorelines when we stop to fish....normally, each move is about 100 yards to the shore, then another 200 + in moving up and down the shore....

The prop and speed control are incredible...very sensitive and easy to control...

In all my trips, I'd say I've put 2 hours each trip, ranging from WOT to slow, I have never run down the series 27's DEKA's to more than 3/3 onthe battery scale.

I found the new Battery tender plug to be the bomb and is very very secure....

Any other reports or problems ??? I'd be interested in hearing....from actual users...not dealers who say don't buy it etc....but, anyone who has run one for 6 months or more....

Mine is great so far! Got quite a few more hours on mine that you have logged with 6 months on mine.  No issues. Only issue I have heard of involves the belt tension and he didn't follow the MK recommended tension adjustment timeline.

So, it sounds like I need to read the owner's manual.  I just had an Ulterra put on my boat, but they didn't tell me anything about belt tension, and the need for

adjustment.  Oh well, I will break out the manual tonight.  Just curious, how often does "the" belt need to be checked or adjusted?

Glad to hear yours is running great. I've seen two different boats with them stuck in the deployed position. Not sure what happened but I'm sure they will get the kinks out. When my motor guide  finally gives out and out of warranty I will most likely be getting the MK

Definitely brush through it. There area couple of lube points too that need attention. I think the guide they use is "periodically" adjust tension. It is easy access and just a screw adjustment.  I give it a touch about once every two weeks which is about every 6 trips and 20 hours of use give or take.

I saw a couple of these malfunctions maybe two years ago when they hit the freshwater market and I am sure there is going to be a glitch or two. I had first gen ipilot and it was plagued.  I kept it as spare just in case the ulterra dies though.

Wanaflatsfish,

Glad to hearyour having good luck.. Have you tried the spot lock(anchor lock) function at all?  I was wondering how well it`s working on the Ulterra. I have been hearing that it doesn`t work as well as the Motorguide Xi5 .Something like that would be great to fish docks it it held position tight enough.
