Island Style
Turned my machine on over the weekend a few time and now I have a black spot about the size of a dime? Anyone have this? Wondering if a new machine is in my future? Garmin 740 touch screen.
jason p
Garmin has great customer support, US based and all. They'll be able to tell you exactly what's going on. They'll usually cut you a deal on a re-manufactured 740 if you want another one.
bernieNC
Screen is on it's way out, start shopping. Had the same thing happen to me some time ago and it was a year or so before it went.
blackacre
Its worth reaching out to Garmin's customer support. Garmin stood behind two 5212's I had well outside the warranty period. Both units started to experience corrosion issues on the back of the units. Garmin serviced and updated the units free of charge. Came back looking like new. Island Style
After speaking to Garmin you are right bernieNC the unit is on its way out. The only option is 300 for a new/refurbed unit with 90 day warranty or buy new. My issue is that this machine is squeezed in TIGHT!! the new 741XS is a hair longer and I don't think it will fit!! Opinions??
bernieNC
I would stay away from putting money in another 740, no support due to being discontinued. 7" echo MAP? Not sure about the size. Open to other brands? Starboard may become a good friend.
Island Style
I wish Starboard would work they have it between the helm and the throttle.. Guess I need to work on getting some sizes. I like the garmin very user friendly and have one on my other boat to transfer waypoints.
johnd
Check out 74SV echo map. "Old" now, the newer version is echo CHIRP... come over and you can play with mine, also take to your boat and see if it fits. Not touch screen (which I don't like, Dave has same touch unit as yours on the Glacier Bay). You can get a "deal" on the sv units now.

fishmanjj
Yep...the old black spot will grow and grow and eventually the whole screen is a black spot. Been there , done that....I actually had a black spot on an old Garmin 541 not touch screen, however, that had a black spot for two years....then one day, it took over. polliwog
I have a depth sounder that just started with the black spot,so it goes for a comb unit since my garmin gps is also having troubles. The depth sounder is 10yrs old so it's time is up.
