Scallop Help

I am playing Mr Mon this weekend again as my wife heads to ATL for yoga training....so what better to do than take the kids on an adventure! Looks like I will be dragging the Redfisher over to Homosassa from Jax and meeting a grammar school buddy who has a 19' camper (hoping he can get a reservation tomm morning!). Ultimate goal - get my 8 year old daughter and 11 year old son on some marine fun. Going to try for some scallops - issue is I have never been, and my buddy, I think he went on a guided gig a few years back.

Looking for any insight on how to make the trip successful. Also, if anyone is going to be over that way, I will be in the dark blue over white Redfisher 16 with the red bimini, and the (hopefully) grinning kids! Stop by and say hi if you see us out and about (you can't miss my son - think big blonde afro!).

Planning on taking a couple rods as well to maybe fish something up if the scallops don't cooperate. I think I have the basics down, but not to proud to take constructive advice. Thanks - Nehrke

We went couple weeks ago out of steinhatcheee. Limited everyday pretty easy so shouldn't be hard to find em where your going. Ask around, people are pretty open about what they  are hearing.

We had most luck where we saw a lot sea urchins. In areas where there were none, really no scallops. I have no idea why, but look for urchins and wear booties.

I am not familiar....and of course my bluechart does not cover the area. We will stay in the channel on the way out and just take it slow. Not in a hurry with the kids on board. more than happy to buddy boat and follow someone around if I have a volunteer. I don't drink when running the boat, but I will drown you in PBR after! Gonna be an adventure!

Once you are out of the channel, there is an area called Gomez rocks that you should look for on a chart and stay away from that area.

If you can hit dead low tide, best for kids to start...once the incoming tide starts current presents challenges for young /weak swimmers.

We found 2 weeks ago in big grass beds..maybe 3ft of water.  Earlier in year they were deeper.  On a weekend just look for the fleet.   Come out of Homo River, follow channel markers.  Look north & south.  2 weeks ago best was north off St Marks (?) islands, about 1/3 way toward CR.    Other years better south in the bay.   Have fun!

Hi all! Just back and cleaning up. We had a blast, lower unit survived, and we managed a few. Not a ton, everyone was in deep water yesterday, and 6.5 with current is too much for kids. I, however, managed ONE yesterday afternoon! As a boat I think we only got 25 or so, but kids had fun.

Today got out early and shallow, around low, and kids did a lot better. Didn't have a ton of time, but probably put 50 in the boat.

Not a massive haul, but all safe and sound, and kids are asking to go again. Thanks all for the help- definitely appreciate it-Nehrke
