TGutt
I have opportunity to buy a 2002 22 foot for 18,000. Concern is the motor. 2004 200hp Vmax hpdi with 635 hours. Checked it out this morning. Compression good, all 6 cylinders firing great, little milky fluid in lower unit. All in all pretty good. I probably put 40 hours a year on a boat maybe a little more. I have heard horror stories about these motors. Any advice? I was looking for a 4 stroke but this price seems really good. Thanks!
smooth move
i wouldn't plan on using that motor. parts are getting hard to find. barter down or try to buy without motor.
smilemaker
It would be nice to combine duplicate topics into one post. But I have not experienced any such problems.
HoneyB
I would not be scared to buy that motor if it is checked out buy a qualified mechinic. I actually thought the lower HP hpdi engines were pretty solid.

I put 1675 hours on a 200 HPDI VMax on my 2400v before I upgraded to the F250. That 200 was rock solid ! The dealership gave me $3000 for it on trade for the F250. It still ran fine....I just thought I wanted the four stroke 250.
Tall Tails
The only issues I had with my HPDI was ethanol related. Change the filters every 50 hrs vs every 100. If you only put 40 hrs a year on it just run the ethanol-free fuel and save the headaches. Those motors were pretty much bulletproof.
fin-addict
as I stated in your other post. 2.6L is bullet proof and it makes for a great combo with that boat. 50+ mph with tower. those hrs. are fine. brother sold his rig last year for 28k, supper clean and loaded. justfish
I have same boat with 2.6 150 HPDI and it's a great combo. My understanding on the 200 is the small block is bulletproof, the big block 200 had some fuel pump issues if it was upgraded, then they are too. I'd try and stay with the small block for the reliability and the fact it makes a great balanced rig

fishmanjj
My 200 HPDI never ever left me stranded....kept her maintained, changed fuel filters every 6 months, had 1675 hours on her when I traded....and often wished I had never made the trade to the F250. I would probably still have the 2400v today if I would have stayed with the lighter weight 200. That year model 2400v was not built for the heavy four strokes....enough said.
