2014 Islamorada OT Reports & Photos

We had another outstanding Islamorada Owner's Tournament this year. Again, the wind blew, but excellent catches were made. If you have some FUN or FISH pictures to post, place them here for all to enjoy. I have some pictures to post with a 'fishin story', but I will start off with the 'Damm-Shame Owner'

Ben Denson tore his Achilles's Tendon very well, and had it repaired recently. Of course, his Surgeon (not his son) told him not to go boating for 6 months or so.. Poor Ben was relegated to hanging around the fish cleaning table and offering to filet fish or slow Iguanas.

Ben is in good company, since I took the honor in 2010 due to a stolen boat plus a stroke. In 2008 we lost our good friend LittleJohn to a diving accident. Ben is a lousy patient, but was a good sport being stuck on the dock !

We have great fish catches from Charlie Johnson and many others to celebrate here, and some new attendees to salute !

I might as well keep it in the family..

Ben's Daughter, Arlene Denson, was the Junior Angler Award Winner !

Her win goes back to the July 4th Owner's (informal)Tournament at Breezy Palms.. A bunch of us go down for the week, and one day I took Arlene & her cohort Sydney Wilson offshore to Dolphin fish.. Well, Dad says, "Hey, throw the buggy whip in the boat and break it out after you guys catch dinner !" Well, after we caught enough fish, she did take out the flyrod.. It did not go well: It was windy, and hard to cast, plus the boat was blowing so fast, it was hard to set the hook.. Fly got spit a dozen times.. So, plans were made for revenge; hook setting lessons were taken, and flyrods were set up for both girls by Scott Wilson & Ben Denson..

Setting up Thursday evening : It was a little Breezy at Breezy.....

And after all the planning & anticipation, we were on a mission. Friday morning still was nasty rough offshore. We worked our way to 14 miles offshore. The girls locked into the corners to cast. I got a few schools of Dolphin to the boat and they caught three on fly and a lil Blackfin before we came back in. Cuttin' & chummin' prompted my refund of breakfast, and a squall with lightning forced a retreat..

Sydney caught two fish on fly, but could not beat the eventual Ladies' Champion huge points..

Shannon and I had a terrific time and it was great to see so many great folks. Fishing was just "ok". We had a lot of shots at really nice reds, but could not seem to get many to eat. I landed a nice trout on Thursday on top water and one real nice red on Saturday. We could have caught 100 snapper, but stopped shortly after filling up the cards. Thanks to Skip and Charlie and all the sponsors for a great weekend!

The resort has a wide breakwater along the outside of the marina to protect the basin from ocean wind, waves and seaweed. They have poured flat concrete on the breakwater rocks so that it can be used for walking, fishing and access to the docks. The marina is huge (33+ slips)compared to all the other motels. Since real estate is valued per oceanfront inch in Islamorada, the jetty is a smart place to store 33+ trailers.

The place is one postcard photo after another. The trailers do stick out, but it works like a champ for us !

Was our 1st OT and we had a blast. Didn't catch much but did manage to land 2 nice reds, some snapper and a Pompano that jumped in the boat and kissed my son on the neck while he was driving! Look forward to next year.

Cheers,

Craig, Carson, & Griffin Hall
