Blake Pearce
Does anybody have any experience with these engines? I am looking at an older Pathfinder with this engine on it and under 500 hours. Thank you.
Drummer
The early SHO motors had a recall for bearing failures. You might have a Yamaha tech see if this one's in the serial number range of the recall. Mine is a 2014 and it failed at 832 hours. Spun at least one bearing. No help from Yamaha. Other than that $13,000 repair, I love it!
Toeknee217
I thought back in 06 the vmax 250 was the hpdi 2 stroke and not a vf model. If it is in fact the hpdi they had a pretty bad reputation.

Series 2 they fixed the oiling issue and updated the injectors i believe. Early 3.3 liter HPDI's had troubles with slow operation (trolling, idling ETC). They built up carbon deposits on injector nozzles and in ports causing for lack of fuel, detonation and internal failures. HPDI's in general need good clean fuel, good direct injection oil and need to run at WOT quite a bit to keep them cleaned out. If the motor has 500 hours already its probably one of the better ones.
