BlueDog
I have a new to me 16' 2000 Hewes Bayfisher. I'm looking for a trolling motor, probably an i-Pilot. The question is whether to buy a 12 or 24 volt troller. The seller did a very nice job of installing a 24 volt system (he kept the troller to use on his other boat). But does this boat need a 24 volt/70 lb. troller? Will a 12 volt work? Something tells me that if 12 is good, 24 is better, especially since the boat is set up for it. Plus, it looks like the price difference between a 12 volt troller and a 24 volt troller is less than $200. Appreciate the input!
gnarlydog
Get a 24v. If you get a 12v, you'll be wishing for the 24v anytime you're going up current. The 12v will do the job but the 24v will do it better. I have a 12v setup on my 2000 Bonefisher 16'.

polliwog
Not even a question 24 V system all the way. I have one on my 20ft LT is perfect for that size boat.
SouthernWake
Do you mainly fish on the trolling motor? If so keep it with 24. If you mainly pole or spot fish and just occasionally use the trolling motor you could get away with a 12 and save some weight.
smilemaker
a 24 volt will not have to work as hard and give better battery run time. I also would feel better about putting one of them as backup to the cranking battery.

HewesYourDaddy
I ran a 12v on my Bonefisher. Almost every fishing trip, I wish I had a 24v system.
