Wake up call to action

Most of you would not be aware of what is going on in the Florida House of Representatives and Senate.  Please allow me to bring you up to speed.

There has been a bill introduced in the House of Representatives as well as the Senate to allow for the unrestricted harvest of largemouth bass for aquaculture purposes.  It is simply written and takes largemouth bass off of the restricted species for aquaculture.  The bill has already made it out of one of the necessary committees and it passed by a 9 to 0 vote!

This will be devastating to the State of Florida on a number of levels.

1.      As written, the bill would allow aquaculture companies to harvest largemouth bass by any means and in any numbers.  The bill calls it “unrestricted” taking.

2.     Most people who bass fish or knows much at all about bass, know that the system is fragile as it is, much less if fished without restriction.

3.     Bass fishing in Florida drives many types of businesses … Tourism, tackle and bait shops, boat dealers, boat builders, the many suppliers that support these businesses, not to mention the number employed by the businesses and their support.

This list would go on and on.  With State Representatives and Senators in favor of this bill there is no doubt in my mind that this will open the floodgates on other species of gamefish within the State.  Are snook next on the list when the bass population is decimated?

The proposed legislation is in Senate Bill 1018, sponsored by Sen. Jim Boyd and House Bill 669, sponsored by Rep. Dana Trabulsy.

It is important that all people who enjoy the sport of fishing get involved in the fight against this type of legislation, likely brought on by some wealthy aquaculture business and being quietly pushed through legislation by unknowing or uncaring politicians.

Please make a call or write a letter to your State Senator and House Representative expressing your opposition to these bills.

Thank you for bringing this to us George !

Your information is spot-on. These Bills smack of special interest groups ripping off our fishing resources by using trendy terms like ‘aquaculture’ and loosely saying ‘certain people’.. You know this means a  closed group of licenses will be issued and our lakes will get netted-out of Bass for export to the high bidders overseas..

Here are the Bills:

Senate Bill 1018, sponsored by Sen. Jim Boyd, and House Bill 669, sponsored by Rep. Dana Trabulsy.  Please call, write or email your local Representatives and Senators with strong opposition to these Bills.. Soon !  The Legislative Session is moving quickly.

The older guys here remember the net boats wiping out migrating schools of baitfish on both coasts, and not being able to catch a Kingfish or Redfish for years !

Thanks, George !!

A friend of mine is a surveyor , and he called me a few weeks ago , and told me they were draining this STA for work , and said there were millions of fish trapped and were going to die .

He said there was Specks and Myans .

So we went there to fill up on fish , that were just going to die .

When we got there , it was disgusting

Fish as far as the eye could see , just waiting to die.

The people , who were digging out there said they had been digging up hundreds of 10 + lb bass and just dumping them on the bank .

It was a hot mess !

Can not believe that crap like that actually happens .

Well with no limit or season on the Myans , we proceeded to help some out and relocate them to out stomachs .
