SCFD rtrd.
I want to make a plywood base for a large umbrella and add 4 wheels, so we can move the umbrella around the pool. Will marine plywood last outside if exposed to sun and rain. Should I paint the plywood. I have no experience with marine plywood.
jim33042
You will want to seal it. It will eventually weather and *** up water, like std plywood. https://www.doityourself.com/stry/5-tips-for-painting-marine-plywood
MuddyBottomBluz
The only difference between standard PT plywood and marine ply is the fact that marine ply uses waterproof glue between the ply's and has more of the ply's in it for ridgity. So it will last a little longer than standard ply but as mentioned will eventually rot if not sealed. Oh yeah; and its freaking expensive! HoneyB
You should do something as far as water proofing the build. Paint with Thompson water seal.. I would go with a stain to repel water and protect the wood as well as giving it a finished look.

MuddyBottomBluz
One more thing I forgot to mention with regards to the difference between marine ply and regular ply; marine ply has no internal voids. In other words some ply's in regular plywood have voids where knots in the wood use to be or just in voids in between the ply's from manufacturing. However all of these improvements marine ply has over regular plywood are all fine and dandy but it is still wood and will rot over time. I like the PVC board advice someone posted in one of the other two post's, they make them up to 3/4" thickness and you could always double them up for more ridgity or install some stiffeners. Let us know what you decide.
DonV
After my last wood buying trip to Home Depot, you may have to get a second mortgage to buy marine grade plywood!!
SCFD rtrd.
Thanks for the help. I'm thinking PVC board with stiffeners. I want this to last several years. What stiffeners would be best? The umbrellas are around salt water and pool chlorine.
HoneyB
Have you looked for a base that would fit you needs? The web including Amazon have a lot of wheeled bases. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/z-shade-concrete-patio-umbrella-base-with-rollers?gmc_feed=t&campid=71700000057441097&adgroupid=58700005323929594&device=m&keyword=92700057191468681&Channel=pla&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5vDxq5GX8AIV2z2tBh3BvgwxEAQYBSABEgK9F_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#repChildCatid=9975505&ogmap=SEM|LOC|GOOG|SHOP|m|SNR||NonBrand-Shopping-Local_Inventory-Sports_and_Rec|Sports_and_Rec-Backyard||71700000057441097|58700005323929594
SCFD rtrd.
HoneyB is a genius. Never thought of looking for a ready made umbrella base, but they make them. And they are about 1/2 the price of the material it would take to built them. Thanks for the responses.
RacerxV6
I think you will be surprised at how long the plywood would last if you prep it right. think about how long decks last with carpet on them they get water on them weekly. build it, seal it and maybe re-seal every other year. I bet it lasts for 10 years easily.
SCFD rtrd.
OK, tried to find ready built or manufactured umbrella stands and can't find anything that will fit the existing umbrellas. So, back to Marine plywood or some type of synthetic wood like PVC. Has anyone worked with PVC sheets before, can they be glued and screwed together? If I were to use marine plywood, what would be the best sealer.
