Moderator
As a young man I made the crossing to the Bahamas many times in small boats with an RDF: Radio direction finder. (Before any navigation electronics or LORAN ). There were radio transmitters placed in locations that would transmit an AM band morse code signal. During transit, you would stop and dial up the station you were heading to. You would turn the antenna for the strongest signal and look at the outer ring for the direction to head.. Keep going that way till you saw land.. I remember Bimini was - - . . - . . . You would look for the two huge palm trees on South Bimini.. Coming home, we would head NW on the compass and look for the big, pink Tower of the Boca Hotel.. @ 22 miles off.. MM
George Seither
Yep! I still remember when we would move around in 206B’s and S62’s using the beacons, when navagation was installed they had warning stickers not to predicate navigation on them LOL
