Popular Post whichwaysup
I had a unique opportunity pop up. After 25 years at the same company, they decided to offer a sabbatical program. To be eligible, it had to be a “milestone” year (15, 20, 25, etc) and I just happened to hit it dead on. So, with very little time to plan, I had to come up with something to do with 5 weeks of paid time off. Never thought I would get something like that. Decided to take the time this fall and planned a week on the Neuse river. Managed to time it (accidentally) with the opening of flounder season, and also when the big bull drum were around. Mostly, wanted a chance to spend time with my dad and brother. With multiple hurricanes churning in the Atlantic, we were nervous anout the weather, but managed to get absolutely flawless conditions. First few days took some scouting but we scratched out dinner and some decent fish. Day 3 we were rewarded with a show as big bull drum chased flounder in 5 feet of water. I have never seen flounder skip on top to escape a predator, but they can fly when they need to. Seeing 40-50lb reds blowing up flounder is a cool sight. Unfortunately they were gone by the time we got to them. Day 3 and 4 we ran across massive schools of shrimp, and cast netted what later amounted to 5 gallon bags of heads off shrimp for the freezer. Day 4 and 5 we found big schools of puppy drum up against a windblown point and lost count of them somewhere north of 35. Managed three on the fly in spite of the wind. Most of all, had a chance to reconnect with my father and brother, and couldnt have asked for a better trip.

In Florida it was always rare to catch decent flounder (at least on the west coast), but here in NC they get thick and big! 14 hours ago, HenrysCreek said: Congrats on the milestone and trip! Boys managed to use their longboards to find some redfish when they werent catching waves. This week headed to Indiana for a family reunion with my wifes side of the family so not much fishing to be had. Then 2 weeks back home to misbehave before I go back to reality for another 10-15 years. And as for needing a mate, come on down!!
