johnd
with closed gunnels I can't see what's behind (or under, depending on how you look at it). I would like to install in gunnel 15 degree rod holders. Anybody done this? Suggestions please
smilemaker
Not difficult if planned properly with the exception of the early years up to about 2002. To do it right it is best to angle the hole saw while cutting. Long ago there was a real good thread on here but it may have been lost in the old days of the transition. HoneyB
I cut some into a 2012 year model 2200TRS. Obviously the first thing is to figure the width of the space between the cap and the hull. Maybe drop a straight line from the rub rail down and measure back to the hull side. Now measure over that distance and make a line on the top of the gunnel. This should give you a safe area to drill your hole. To drill the hole make a jig with a 2x4 in order to get your angle. I used a quick square to align the drill on the 2x4. Once you have a 15 degree hole you can run your hole saw through the board into the gunnel. As always measure twice cut once 😜
HoneyB
One more thing I assume if you want to put in 15 degree holders you will want to angle them outward a bit. I turned the ones I put amid ship out a little and placed the ones on the stern straight back.
johnd
thank you re way to measure. Photos look like 22TRS also doesn't have 'open' gunnel. I already have a 2x4 with 15 degree (might be 30, have to check) used on previous project. Appreciate the photos.
