Slo Poke1
Mine overheats while on a plane at 6". It runs best all the way down.
mulligan
I think a lot depends on setup. I have no issue running all the way up.

I can run all the way up and maintain water pressure. Do you have Low water pickup?
Slo Poke1
My water p/u is std VMAX, I just know I can't plane very long at 6" up and I just had the impeller changed . What is the low water pick up? After market item?
smilemaker
The answer is both. Some lower units have a water pickup that is lower than the point of the unit. It is almost always in the water. It is smaller than the regular pickups above the gear housing. You can buy some aftermarket kits to put on or send your lower unit off to a machine shop for modification.
JEM
Would a low water pickup be more prone to sucking up sand if you were hitting bottom? Just curious.
Tarpon1215
Short answer is YES!

linesider 159
Try changing your speed and/or trim tab adjustment. If I go too slow with the jackplate up I lose water pressure, in most other cases I can run all day with it at 6 inches
