Speaker advice

Thinking about going with this newer Sony model vs head unit and separate amp.  Specs:

The MEX-M100BT has a built-in Class-D amplifier that outputs a CEA-2006 compliant max of 100W x 4, or 40W RMS x 4 channels.

So based on speaker specs/watts - would the JL MX770 or the JL M770 pair up better?

Thanks!

You will need more amperage to run either JL series. My favorite set up on a boat is a M400 amp with a Bluetooth adapter and two 7.7 M series.  If you are set on a head unit, couple it with an amp.

What Lap it Up said.  If you are going to install premium speakers, you really need a matched quality amplifier to make them sound like they are supposed to.  Its like putting a 90 hp motor on the 26HPS.  It will move the boat, but not well.  If you want that head unit and no amplifier, you are better off with a mid priced set of speakers that are closer to the 40 watt RMS rating.  You will probably blow those speakers(the JLs) because you will need to crank up the head unit and the amp will start to clip.  Also, the head unit will always run real hot.  Just not a good set up.  Good luck.

Thanks for replies - was trying to find an "in-between" system but just not going to work.  Like you guys said - either stick to a basic deck and speakers or go with quality speakers and amp.  Seems like everyone really likes the JL speakers and JL amp...

I have 4 7.7 JL speakers and the M400 JL amp.  Great sounding system with plenty of oomph for my ears.  No complaints at all.  I can jack it up while running and have no problem hearing it over the engine and wind noise.

I went with Rockford fosgate speakers and amp. It sounds great. No complaint and half the price of JL components. If I ran it as loud as some of my friends you may notice a difference but for the money they are great.
