Cculp218
Hey guys, I'm looking to replace the rod tube end flanges on my MA 17. Ive seen a few different kinds online but haven't been able to find any the correct size. mine now are the white plastic ones from the factory and are totally shot from years of sun and weather. If anyone on here has had any luck locating these or know where i can find the right ones i would greatly appreciate it! the Inside diameter of the existing ones are right around 1 1/2" I have found smaller and also lager diameter ones. hoping y'all can help. Thank you
DaveC
C.... I have been trying to find the same thing for my 2000 17' MA, nobody... NOBODY has them... I will be sealing that reveal in and rolling the edge into the end of the rod tube itself, I am out of options at this point and frustrated. It'll work out though... Good luck, I'll post some pics when it's done....

mulligan
I have seen some get pvc just smaller than the size you need. Heat it up and stretch to fit. I have not done it for rod tunes but pvc is cheap and easy to shape so it might be worth a shot.
hurricane
Somewhere deep inside a filing cabinet inside the MBC headquarters, is the part number and manufacturer. Either that or it's buried with Jimmy Hoffa in the Bermuda Triangle.
Hurricane Bubba
With the demand for these I could foresee someone taking a few measurements and getting a CAD model together, purchasing some starboard (or equivalent), and having a few CNC'd. Should be a pretty easy job. Then once you have the CNC file and the materials you could probably make a killing, selling them in sets of 4. The starboard would never have to be replaced. r, Bubba
mulligan
Do you guys have any pics and dimensions?
hurricane
I have some old ones that are in bad shape. Can take pics or measurements, or even send one somewhere.
mulligan
Gabe, If you can get a few pics and measurements I might be able to come up with something. I get bored easily so it might give me something to do in the shop.
triplec
Mine are different on my 96 and inside rod lockers but I couldn't find anything that would work so redid the tubes and replaced the corrugated stuff with PVC and flared the ends with heat gun. No boat pic for you yet but I practiced on rod holders for my garage first. Heat gun and bottle and PVC rolls right over on itself or whatever flare you need. I found it best to roll it all the way back. You tube has some how to vids. I used 1 1/2 PVC
Flychukar
Here are 2 options using a desk cable management grommet (only using one of the 2 parts). There are a ton of other plastic grommets that could work. Might even try a plastic curtain grommet (see link). They seem to come in different sizes. Durability could be an issue with either option. https://www.amazon.com/1-1-White-Desk-Grommet-Package/dp/B000N27SX2 https://www.lowes.com/pd/The-Hillman-Group-2-Pack-1-1-2-Plastic-Grommets/4258955 https://grommetmart.com/products/77/plastic-10-1-3-8-inch-heavy-duty-plastic-grommets.html
DaveC
Flychukar.... Where have you been brother! I think that Hillman Group Grommet could work out, UV will be the question but.... Thanks !

I looked at the pics and they look like they would work nice for just the end cap part of the rod tube. But my problem is that the entire length of the under guwale rod tube is rough and looks like it was sort of unfinished coming from the factory. It's not smooth all the way so it does a number on rod tips! Especially high end, high dollar fly rods. I'll take a pic later on and add it to the discussion to see what everyone thinks. I've seen so many smooth tubes (PVC?) on other friends' boats that make me think mine were never finished.
Cculp218
Ok guys so here's what I came up with. The holes without the trim ring measure roughly 1 3/4" the pvc inside the rod tube is slightly larger im guessing along the lines of 2" so I ordered some trim rings 1 7/8" from replacement boat parts website. I'm going to just use the Dremel and open them up slightly to fit the new ones. I will post pictures of before during and after. I'm going to make a template with one of the new to show how much material I will need to remove then I will seal them in with some silicon. Here is the link to the part I ordered. I will be reporting back after the weekend. http://www.replacementboatparts.com/178idwhitetrimring.aspx
mulligan
Pondfisher If you need the rod tubes and they are not the standard PVC pipe size you may have luck at Plastics America in Tampa. They have all kinds of tubing and what not that may work for you.
triplec
Pond, If it helps and they are like my old OEM ones they were made out of a semi flexible "corrugated style" tubing that has a wire binder almost like a small flexible dryer vent hose. Guides will catch a bit on them.
pondfisher
mulligan, triplec, Thank you. Tonight I'm going to look down inside the hull through the anchor locker to see what the ends of them look like. I might even take a pic and post it to see what you guys think. lurem
When I snapped one of mine on my Hewes I called Ray at MBC and he gave me the info. Have any of you tried Ray?
Flychukar
I talked with MBC last week and the trim ring is available through their dealer network. It is sized to fit inside a 1.5" tube. The part number is simply "trim ring".
hurricane
That will prolly work, but need some trimming on the depth. The ones on my boat are only about 1/2" deep.
mulligan
Hurricane mailed me one of his old ones to pattern off of. The one I got from him measures 1.75" O.D. and 1.40" ID and is 1/2" tall. This is without the shoulder or the little flare at the end. I found the if you take a 1 1/4" SCH40 pvc, heat it and put it over something that is 1.5" round it will get you close when it cools down. After the pipe cools it measures 1.75" OD and 1.45"ID. hurricane
Holy crap look what I found! I'm pretty sure this is the original part. There was just this one on the shelf at the boat store. I checked Th Marine web page didn't see them, but maybe if you need them it would be worth a phone call to Th.
