FROZEN
Guys, Time for a new anchor line. Boat is '08 2200TE. Currently, I have 50' of 3/8", three brade. Anchor is aluminum w/ 6' of chain. My sons recently started spear fishing and are going to a little deeper water (25'). We are at Gulf of Mexico at Homosassa, and normally fish and scallop in shallower water. Question is do I stay with 3/8" and go to 100' length, or go to 1/2" at 100'. 3/8" says it's good for 4400 pound break point. Is that enough for my boat? What determines cheap v. premium line? Thanks in advance for your advice!
fin-addict
150'/3/8", use 3 strand not braid. braid does not give and absorb shock as well as three strand. stay with the 6' chain.
SCFD rtrd.
Can't comment on quality (cheap/premium), but I guess you get what you pay for. 3/8" is plenty strong enough, and as fin-addict suggested buy 3 strand twisted and maybe 150 ft. for those windy days. 3/8" line will be much easier to store in the anchor locker. bernieNC
The larger diameter is easier on the hands.
Headhunter
I have 3/8 twisted line at 150 ft. I also use a fortress, more money light weight, lifetime warranty and easy on the back for us old guys.
Wanaflatsfish
First, Dump that anchor...go sea claw...it will hold in anything...don't need a chain in most cases, but, I used to use one on my path...Get a anchor bouy, then no need to drag it up.. dc
FROZEN
Thanks all...... I got the 150' of 3/8", 3 strand line today. Bought the premium for $25 extra because I had no reason not to. (I know....dumb reason!) Truth is, I use the anchor feature on the iPilot 99% of the time, and always thought of the real anchor as an emergency or last resort method to "lock" the boat. Now that sons are using the anchor in deeper water, I'll spare no expense for safety and effectiveness. I'll tackle the anchor type after feedback from their next exercise. Thanks, you guys are the best!
RipTide
Hold off on buying a new anchor for awhile. You'll be surprised what you come across on the ocean floor....like anchors. Get them a good float bag to raise the spoils.
