HewesYourDaddy
The new boat I picked up has a 2006 Yamaha 70 2-stoke. The last time he used it, the tach jumped back and forth a few times then went to the max rpm side of the gauge and stayed there. Now, when you turn the key on (or start cranking engine), it jumps to max rpm side of gauge and stays there. What causes this and what's the fix? mdemott
Is this a analogue gauge? If it is a Faria, they will replace it for free if the previous owner registered it. If it is a Yamaha then you are in for a new gauge. This is assuming that you have checked a traced the wires and haven't found any shots or crossed wires. If it's a digital Yamaha it may be fixable but usually it just get's replaced.
hurricane
You could check the dip switches on the inside back. There are 3 of them and they need to be in a certain position for 2s and another for 4s, maybe they are wrong. Google it you will find the correct positions for the switches. HewesYourDaddy
Analog gauge. It worked fine for most of the day today. Fired it up to leave the beach and it pegged out again and stayed there.
hurricane
Ok, never mind my info, thats for a digital gauge. If you can't find a loose or corroded wire, prolly a gauge.

mdemott
Too bad you are not closer to Jacksonville as I have a spare Yamaha analog. It has a split in the glass from overtightening but worked fine when I took it out of the boat. If you determine you need a new gauge, Hardcore Marine in Hollywood, FL is where I buy mine.
