SthurmanFW
another quick newbie question what is the best way to seal a wire splice? is there a marine, waterproof shrink wrap? thx
hurricane
Heat shrink butt splice. Can get them at local marine store, or even Lowes and the Depot. For added sealing coat with liquid electrical tape after crimping and shrinking.
Fly Zone
These Guys are pretty reasonable and have everything you need https://www.delcity.net/store/Heat-Shrink-Butt-Connectors/p_805403.r_IS1012?&mkwid=sqErH7P74&crid=78412707389&mp_kw=heat shrink butt connectors&mp_mt=e&gclid=CKSwiISz8tMCFdVXDQodDkEIqg
jason p
All heat shrink connectors are not the same. Pay for good ones that have adhesive inside the connector. You can't tell by looking at them but you'll see it ooze out of the ends when you heat the splice and your done. No messy liquids or dealing with heat shrink. Another benefit is that if you're a goon with a crimper, like me and pierce the connector the adhesive will seal that as well. I'm not a professional electrician but my neighbor is so I can only speak for the Pacer Marine brand, that's what he uses and I order from him. SCFD rtrd.
Good stuff Jason p. You can actually see the glue has sealed the puncture and oozed out of the connector.
hurricane
Yes, don't use the ones from Harbor Freight.
jason p
As stated I'm a total goon with wire crimpers, and far from a professional. You can also see where the wire coming from the left was stripped too far back leaving bare strands outside the metal part of the connector (another hallmark of my wiring technique) the "good connectors" will also take care of this. DonV
Here ya go! More than you will ever need to know about splicing marine wires. http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/wire_termination I found the strength test on page #5 very interesting!!! I normally buy my adhesive shrink, splices, terminals, etc. from Genuinedealz (I'm in to free shipping). I always buy at least 25 more than I think I'll need.....nice to open your parts bin and they're already there! Nothing worse than having to run to WM and pay their price 'cause you are out of connectors!! https://www.genuinedealz.com/ Buy the good stuff up front!! This is not where Harbor Freight tools is "good enough"!!
