Chuck59
I have a 2003 Hewes Redfisher 16. Original livewell pump cracked. Was going to replace strainer, pump and plastic ball valve that apparently failed. Is there a way to do this without removing thru-hull fitting? Are the pipes threaded? Thanks
smilemaker
The thru hull fitting is a seperate piece from the 90 deg fitting and the ball valve. If the 90 is bronze and in good shape leave it and replace with a good valve. Bronze is best but ss will work. Leave the plastic alone. From there just run strainer and pump. many people confuse a seacock and thru hull. A seacock is a single piece with the valve . The retaining piece is on the outside . Most small boats have a threaded thruhull with a ball valve attached.

James Grissom
You can find them many Marine places , Google (Raw water screen marine ) they can be ordered with multiple size inlet ports. l.E. 3/4 ". Thru 2" dia. Their inlets are standard pipe threads .The transparent cup come in 2 sizes as well , for the 3/4 to 1 " size inlet ports that most of us use. Most important thing to look for is , that the basket / screens are stainless steel .lf you go with the plastic type body , do not over tighting your brass fittings into the threaded ports , and use a quality non hardening thread sealant . Also back flush after ur system and cycle your ball valves after use with fresh water , they have been knowledge to seize up . Also dry fit every piece of your system before bonding or sealing every thing togeather .Make Sure Your Shut Off Handles are in the most convenient location to fully open and full close the ball valves. It's really a easy job ,always good ideal to take pic's before removing and before complete tear down
SCFD rtrd.
I use "Boat-Life" caulk/sealer when I make up threaded connections. It will allow you to align everything just right without over tightening. It never hardens, so you can take stuff apart later down the road. Mr. Grissom gave you some very good information above.
