eilybird
Does anyone know if the rod holders are structural. I want to remove them and finish the underside of the gunnels but Im afraid that the rod holders may support the gunnel for weight.
whichwaysup
You are talking about the horizontal, under gunnel rod holders. I am not sure, but I do theink they support the gunnels.
bigsnook35
On both my Hewes Bayfisher and Hewes Light Tackle they provide support for the gunnels. They are not attached but there is very little space between them. And when you walk on them the gunnels touch them when they save a little under weight. eilybird
I walked around the boat and I think if I do remove them I will put something back structurally.

I think that would be good - I always noticed a little flexing between the aft rod holder and the rear deck where it didn't feel like it had enough support. You'd probably be making an improvement to remove the rod holders and then reinforce the gunnels in more locations.
