It's mounted on the side of the gunwale not the top. I planned to keep it on all summer and take it off during the winter, but it's so out of the way that I just leave it on all the time. Make sure you mount it so that the back seats still flip up. There is a sweet spot that's far enough back but not too far to interfere with the motor when its tilted up.
