linesider 159 Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 I seem to remember a thread here where someone had an hpdi with a slight hesitation around 3500 rpm. All other rpms were fine but back off to 3500 and it would kick for a second and come right back. Already did fuel system and micro filters.
captpn Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 Maybe an injector or coil if you already did fuel VST and all that stuff. Any codes?
linesider 159 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Report Posted January 14, 2019 No codes. I was thinking coil. I should have done it when I did the micro filters, but didn't clean or flow test injectors.
mulligan Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 That was mine. After they redid everything I had done and had already checked they thought they found the problem when they found a small hole in the tuner. After I did a test run with them and the new tuner was in, the problem was still there. They finally traced it to a weak battery cable. I took the boat home, replaced the cable, and all is good now. If you want I can tell you the list of things I and the shop did trying to figure out the issue.
linesider 159 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Report Posted January 14, 2019 My engine trim does seem slow while the motor is running. So you replaced the positive cable from motor to battery/switch? I have a new tps sensor, all filters done, no codes, coils were apparently checked, and shift position switch.
mulligan Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 I was not taking any chances and replace both cables from the battery to the motor including the battery switch. Sounds like the same thing that was happening to me. I did the TPS, all filters (including the injector filters and ones inside the hp pump) had maybe 10 hours on them when it started, injectors were just flow tested/cleaned, coils checked, new plugs, fuel pumps tested, new battery....
linesider 159 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Report Posted January 14, 2019 I will do it and report back, I appreciate it! Yours ran fine at wot but hesitated at 3500 correct?
mulligan Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 Yep. Ran fine through out the rpm range except a few hundred rpms around 3500-3700 or so. It was a quick blip in the rpm and felt almost a slight miss.
Lap it Up Posted January 14, 2019 Report Posted January 14, 2019 Yamaha duplex battery / power cables are notorious for going bad. Even if it doesn't fix it, I would replace with good marine grade tinned cables with quality crimped ring terminals.
linesider 159 Posted January 14, 2019 Author Report Posted January 14, 2019 Cables will be replaced tonight and Ill sneak it out for a test run in the morning

Anything over 4400 rpm quick blip and back to normal then repeats itself till I back off to 4300 or lower then no problems. Have not looked into anything yet.
