ReelMean 1900V
So is this a gar or houndfish? I’ve heard many of times that gar don’t go in the salt water & most likely it’s a houndfish if you’ve seen it in the salt water. This guy was hanging out around the boat last Friday while we were at The Sandbar in Stuart (very close to the inlet for those unfamiliar with the area) Definitely salty water. I’ve caught hounds plenty of times looking like an overgrown needlefish. This guy looks like gar to me. I am not an expert on this so please chime in. HewesYourDaddy
It's a gar. We see them all the time here in full saltwater. We also catch them sometimes in the 10lb range (I've seen much bigger). The ones we have here are alligator gar.
DWoodham
Definitely a gar. I see them in salt water especially after a big rain.

mdemott
Used to live in Stuart and would see them from time to time They have adapted to salt over time. Now live in Fernandina Bch and see them in the saltwater creeks.
ReelMean 1900V
I’ve been fishing the Indian River here in Stuart for 20yrs now (mainly from the power plant to just south of the st. Lucie inlet) I’ve heard talk but never seen a pic. This was the first time coming across one. Thanks again for the info
