Popular Post whichwaysup
Had an interesting week last week - Scouted around to see if the trout run had begun, but largely discovered it was still too early and the water too warm. We did find some, though, and managed three keepers Thursday with one of the fattest fish I've ever seen. It wasn't quite enough for a full dinner for my crew, so my son and I decided to try again friday morning. We were a little more successful, landing 4 nice keepers in the 16-19" range. The bite stopped early, so we decided to scout around and found our way back into a section of the marsh I'd never explored. The tide was pushing us up a deeper creek and, while my son was transfixed by the possibilities, I wasn't terribly optimistic. I'd been up creeks like this a thousand times and had only found fish on two occasions. I had just finished explaining this to him when we came around a bend and watched a Redfish bellycrawl along a shallow bar, his entire back sticking completely out of the water. My son was stuck on the poling platform behind me and couldn't get into position to make a good cast. I was watching our window of opportunity close as the fish approached deeper water, so I shot a cast off and landed my lure a couple feet away from the fish. The water exploded and I knew I'd spooked the fish, so I started reeling in, only to realize that I was now connected to a freight train. I set up, fought her around and through some marsh grass, and we managed to bring her over the gunnel. She was just under 26 inches. My son and his buddy are now completely agog at the idea of "hunting" redfish in the marsh. They snuck out of a surf contest early so they could go back and explore the area. I got a whispered call from my son that went like this, "DAD! We found them! It's a dream come true! They are everywhere! I've been broken off twice! I gotta go!" Click. They only managed to land one, but they had them swimming by their legs as they waded and hunted. He's talked about nothing else since.

whichwaysup
Another interesting dawn patrol w/ the oldest son. Looked for trout, but an unexpected cold front overnight shut them down. Got so cold and so frustrated we went back to the ramp and warmed up in the truck for awhile, then ventured back out. Decided to take advantage of a low tide to scout for reds that might be hunkering down in some deep sections of marsh creeks. As we were exiting the boat, we saw a family of otters just behind us, squeaking and calling each other. A very cool bonus for the morning. We literally walked the boat as far back as we could get it, using the trolling motor to help (another cool use of the ipilot!). We probably walked a muddy mile searching up and down creeks for reds, and managed to spook one but no luck. Coming out, we started to climb back into the boat when just outside the mouth of the creek a school of reds blew up a baitschool. Literally ran over oysters and tripped through mud, but missed the frenzy. My son shot a cast to the last place we saw them and came tight on a scrappy little rat red, so our day wasn't a dismal failure. Another blow up down the bank had us doing the oyster shuffle again and again we got there too late. We fired casts off blindly and managed to hook up simultaneously - him to a 17" flounder and me to a 22" red. No more bites, but turned out to be a pretty memorable trip!
Seacraft06
Today’s haul. The fishing is starting to pick up in Key West. Blacked out both live wells with pilchards in one throw today. Should get even better as the water cools off.
