Its cool that this group values getting the next generation addicted to our boat and fish addictions. Great job Dad. I am a few years ahead of you with my kids, and I can tell you that your investment in her will pay dividemds beyond your wildest dreams. My oldest is now 17, and we are making that transition from parent/child relationship to one of deep friendship. I have a few great friemds I love to fish with, but they always get second place when one of my kiddos wants to go. You done good, and you came back with a lot more than fish . . . 2

Every chance I can get her on the boat, we are out there. I’m lucky enough to keep the boat on a lift so we are out several times a week. When she asked for her own rod, I could not resist! Just glad she enjoys it. I try to make the fishing trips with her short and enjoyable so she will continue to want to go.

Popular Post whichwaysup
Well, I've got a few updates, might make an entertaining read, but (spoiler alert), the ending's a bit tragic. . . . Day 1: Saturday, I took #3 child fishing. Weather forecast was dicey, but we thought we might sneak in and out before the weather hit. We were sadly mistaken, but being both stupid and determined, we decided to make the most of the situation. Launched at dawn, went to the first spot which has been a honey hole, and came up empty. Tried a few other spots, but the flounder were apparently sleeping in. Saw a storm starting to build, so hit one last spot, and of course, the fish were wide awake. Managed a flounder bite, hook up, or catch on every cast for a solid 45 minutes. I would have loved to have seen the bottom of the river there, because it had to have been stacked with flounder three fish thick. We would have kept catching, but the storm blew up and we made a bee-line for a local marina and had to hunker down for 45 minutes till it passed. Future radar said we were done w/ storms, so headed waaaaay downriver and fished a new spot. 3 flounder later, we watched two little storms form then coalesce into one massive storm, and realized it was building between us and safety. Nothing for it but to bolt and hope we could get through it before the wind and lightning got us. 50 MPH through some of the snottiest, nastiest conditions I've ever been in, and I've never loved that MA hull so much in my life. We short through the channel of the marina just as the first lightning bolt hit. Hunkered down for an hour and 15 minutes as the storm continued to build directly above us. When it ended, we headed back out for round 3, a few more fish, then back to the marina for the next storm. 30 minutes, back out we go, a few more fish, and we finally had to call it a day. It was wet, wild, but enormously fun, and my little guy ALMOST out fished me, but I pulled ahead right at the end. Day 2: After Day 1, my 15 year old son (who just bought his own boat with a buddy) informed me that he wanted to take ME fishing. There's no way to quite describe that experience. Sunday, after Mass, he gets in the truck, drives me (and his older sister) to pick up his boat, picks up and launches his own boat, puts his sister and me in it, drives us to the spot, and we fish for a solid 4 hours. His new-to-him, but well used trolling motor died on him, so we are forced to drift and anchor, but I learned how many fish I am missing by moving too quickly. He manages 6 flounder to my 5, then lands a 29 inch redfish. His poor sister barely avoided a polecat, but managed a single flounder and a croaker to salvage her pride. To watch my son "captain" his own boat, was probably to coolest thing a father could ask for. . . Day 3: After such a successful day 2, my son asked if he and his buddy can fish after work. Having seen him in action, my wife and I decided to allow it, even though we aren't crazy about them being out on the river and fishing till dusk. The boys are responsible, and we set some clear rules about communication, time back at ramp, etc. Things seem to be going smashingly well . . . until we stop hearing from him. His sister calls us, because he isn't at the ramp when and where he should be. Mom and dad start having that nightmare scenario . . . Where is he? What happened? He'd called his sister before they headed for the ramp, so we know that something has happened between his last spot and the ramp. It's not that far . . . Calls go unanswered, multiple texts get no response . . . The next call we get is from his sister. He's back at the ramp, there's "very bad news," but she isn't allowed to share it, and he doesn't want to tell us over the phone. He's safe, but we've got an agonizing 30 minutes to wait to find out what the dickens happened. It's pretty bad news. . . Turns out, the boys had removed the motor lock from the boat when they were working on the bottom. It was so rusted out, they threw it away, but never replaced it. Without the lock, the clamps slowly loosened on the transom bracket . . . Apparently, they made a sharp turn in the middle of a deep channel w/ a nasty current . . . . and things got really quiet. The engine flew off at full speed, and took the battery with it. There's no hope of recovery - it's sitting at the bottom of a tanic water stained river channel with current so strong I wouldn't swim in it, much less dive. The boys are learning a lot about boats, and this lesson is going to be an expensive one. As a dad, all I wanted to do this a.m. was to run out and buy a shiny new engine for the boys to keep them on the water, but I know better. This has to be their mistake, their problem, their recovery (but you can bet I'm quietly researching options for them!). My son came into my office this a.m. and told me that his buddy's parents offered to give them money to help replace the engine, but he wanted to refuse it. He told me, "Dad, we did this. We didn't check the clamps. It's our mistake, I don't want their money. I want to fix this myself." Dang, that boy just made my day.
Moderator
Thank God there was no tragedy !! Just a motor. Scared me till I read it ! It’s best to learn early on that ‘the sea giveth, and the sea taketh away.’ Glad they didn’t get hurt. Again, I will compliment the investments you have made with your son, and the advantages he has over all his peers now. MM

whichwaysup
Thanks Mod. Yeah, we felt the same way. A motor can be replaced, a son cant. We spent this a.m. running grid searches for it, no luck, but if it can be found, we will get it and get it running again. Kids have a lead on a professional diver who is wilking to help. Stay tuned. Lap it Up
A definite lesson learned. Glad everyone is safe. I have owned and driven a lot of Jon boats (still have one!) and i have been thrown out of two (No fun). Kill switch lanyard and tightening those clamps constantly will keep everyone safer. If the engine doesn't need to come off often i recommend bolting it to the transom. Seal with silicone and you can get it off pretty easily.
