Apparently, she appreciated the TLC because she just gave me two of the best fishing days I can remember. Took Thurs and Friday off and am so tired today (Sat) that I dont even WANT to fish. . . Friday - fished 545 to noon with a good buddy who has taught me almost everything I know about boat maintenance. Started out the day with a 28.5 inch striper before dawn, and managed a total of six quality fish between us within the first hour. Hit a few other spots, and he put me on a 23 inch red on my flyrod. We landed another 5 rat reds, then moved over to a spot I wanted to try for trout. Managed a couple keeper trout (harder to find up here in NC than down south), and then i got a massive thump. Turned out to be a 24 inch Flounder. Thats a grand slam up here and we were off the water by lunchtime. Friday, a different buddy and I managed a near limit (7 of 8 ) keeper trout, then went exploring for some reds and striper. The striper proved elusive, but we managed 50 (almost exactly equally split) redfish and 3 flounder. Most of the reds were 16-17 inches, but they were scrappy and hungry. They are allowed to be better surfers, but i get to be the better fisherman. Yesterday, my son grossly violated that contract and humiliated his dad. 3 hrs, 10 fish, and he had me 2 to 1 and he got all the big ones. Very cool experience though, we were fishing a spot and I saw a “blob” show up on the live scope. Knew it was a big fish so I was watching it. My son is reeling in quickly to fire off another cast and I watch the “blob” zoom across the screen. I had just enough time to yell “you are getting chased! He’s after you!!” before my son’s rod doubled over right at the boat. In fairness to the old guy, I lost my big red near the boat, but still would have been beaten by his last minute greenfish.
